The South West Academy Open Exhibition 2022
PRIVATE VIEW: Thursday 3rd November 6.30pm – 8.30pm
This year both Andrew and Diane will be exhibiting at The South West Academy Open Exhibition 2022.
The South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts is a charity dedicated to advancing the creation and appreciation of art in the South West of Britain. The Academicians, including Andrew, are all outstanding practitioners of fine and applied arts with varied practices, backgrounds and styles. The Open Exhibition invites entries from regional, national and international artists exhibiting alongside the Academician’s work.
Andrew will be exhibiting his recently completed project, ‘William Marshal’. It is a piece that brings alive the story of William Marshal dubbed “England’s greatest knight”. He served five English kings from Henry II through to his grandson Henry III. He was 70 years old at the time of the 1217 Battle of Lincoln. The sculpture brings together Andrew’s trade-mark skills of portraiture and storytelling. The realistically accurate figure of Marshal, drawn extensively from historical documents, is shown in full battle mode on top of his powerful steed.
Diane will be exhibiting her unique and compelling figure, ‘Psamathe – Beach Goddess’. From Greek mythology Psamathe was the Nereid goddess of sand and the wife of Proteus. Diane is fascinated by the subtleties of sculpting the human form and creating soft skin textures from earthy natural clay. Her signature touch is to always include decoration on a figure, often through jewellery, and in this case, the addition of a headdress of shells – perfect for Psamathe.
Both pieces can be seen at the Exhibition and are for sale.
This year the Open Exhibition is held at Kennaway House in the heart of Sidmouth. Built in 1805, the year of Trafalgar, Kennaway House is a handsome Regency mansion standing in its own grounds.
